What is Creative Placemaking? →
To be honest I didn’t know what it was until today either. Check out this very informative article, from the National Endowment for the Arts website, that discusses the values arts/culture creates for the economy. Funny thing is creative placemaking has been happening here in the metro area for a long time, we just didn’t know what to call it!

Stakeholder's meeting #1 was a success!
The Stakeholders meeting this morning at the Denver Botanical Gardens, facilitated by Engaged Public was a really excellent forum. We had good turn out from many tier III organizations, county cultural council members, and county liaisons.
So what is a stakeholder meeting anyway? Here is a little history on how the meeting came to be:
At the 2011 board planning session it was concluded that...
Go Inside the Museum of Outdoor Arts
I took a little detour on my way to the Douglas County Cultural Council Meeting on Tuesday and stopped by the Museum of Outdoor Arts and I must say I was truly blown away by their current show Light Supply. I knew MOA has many outdoor piece, but I was didn’t realize the extent and quality of their indoor exhibit. It is a real diamond in the rough. The museum is located within the...

The Interworkings of Eligibility
Curious as to how new organizations become part of the SCFD family? Not to fear, Erica is hear to share all.
Well to start things off, new organizations must have applied for eligibility by September, 30 2011 (date changes yearly but it is typically in the fall). Once eligibility applications are received by SCFD staff, they first land on my desk where I do the initial eligibility review....

Poo Powered?
Yup you heard right! The Denver Zoo will be implementing a biomass gasification system, for their Asian Tropics exhibit, that will be converting everything from animal wastes to trash into usable energy. Biomass technology sounds pretty fancy, but it is not anything new. Gasification has been around for 180 years and it has been used for everything from power plants to running vehicles,...

Mayoral Transition - But where is the SCFD?
The results of a long race for Denver Mayor are finally in! Mayor-elect Michael Hancock defeated Chris Romer with 58% of the votes, and he’s already planning for dynamic transition.
What really interests me is Hancock’s stance on the arts. His “Strategic Plan to Grow Arts and Culture” lists the following as key focus areas:
Coordinating dynamic partnerships

"Cultured People Feel Less Stress" →
According to a study recently published in the British Medical Association’s Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health:
Regardless of education or wealth, people who go to museums or concerts or make art tend to be happier.
The link between culture and good feelings were different for men and women.
The last quote is a particularly juicy morsel for discussion:

I am particularly excited about the second year of Centerfest, a collaborative event hosted by the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Performances start tomorrow and continue through September 1st.
The best thing about Centerfest isn’t the outdoor seating or the close-knit community...
