the official blog of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District

Since 1989, Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) has distributed funds from a 1/10 of 1% sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. The funds support cultural facilities whose primary purpose is to enlighten and entertain the public through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement and preservation of art, music, theatre, dance, zoology, botany, natural history and cultural history.

Mayoral Transition - But where is the SCFD?

The results of a long race for Denver Mayor are finally in!  Mayor-elect Michael Hancock defeated Chris Romer with 58% of the votes, and he’s already planning for dynamic transition.

What really interests me is Hancock’s stance on the arts.  His “Strategic Plan to Grow Arts and Culture” lists the following as key focus areas:

  • Coordinating dynamic partnerships
  • Working to attract new creative industry
  • Increasing student access and exposure to cultural and creative arts
  • Leveraging city assets and educational institutions
  • Fostering local talent
  • Bolstering community-based creative and educational opportunities
  • Acting as the city’s cultural liaison/ambassador

I find it curious that the SCFD is not listed in this strategic plan although it is a major contributor to the Denver cultural scene.  While I’m sure his plate is already full, it will be interesting to keep an eye on Hancock’s arts & culture platform in the coming months.
