Since 1989, Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) has distributed funds from a 1/10 of 1% sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. The funds support cultural facilities whose primary purpose is to enlighten and entertain the public through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement and preservation of art, music, theatre, dance, zoology, botany, natural history and cultural history.

Summertime…and the livin’ is busy!

It’s not easy to sleep in these days with so much happening. We think weekends are a “break” from busy work weeks, but really they’re time to get out with some of our amazing SCFD organizations. Here’s a summary of some things happening this weekend:

Last chance to see Cities of Splendor at the Denver Art Museum. I recommend checking it out Friday night during Untitled (the museum is open until 10pm!). While you’re at it, check out a 10-minute play by Buntport Theatre in the freight elevator on the 3rd floor.

Get out in the sun with the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival at Sloan’s Lake. Boat races, great food, and cultural performances/booths from SCFD organizations including the Filipino-American Community of Colorado, Mudra Dance Studio, Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu Academy, Colorado Children’s Museum, and The Wildlife Experience.

Learn something (without paying for an MBA) at PHAMALy’s performance of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. Playing through August 7th at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Head north to Boulder on July 30th for the 64th Annual Barbershoppers Harmony Festival hosted by The Chautauqua Association.

Head south to Littleton on July 30th for The Stylistics hosted by the Hudson Gardens and Event Center. The Little River Band performs on July 31st.

Head west to Central City for a special weekend of “Central City Days”, presented by the Central City Opera.

Head to the hills for the Evergreen Jazz Festival, cited by national columnist Bob Lynn as “the best jazz festival anywhere”.

Take the kids to the Children’s Museum of Denver on Sunday afternoon for “Super Science Sunday - Solar S’Mores”.

Make a date night with the Mizel Museum and the Denver Film Society to see “Spotlight on Amos Gitai: Disengagement” during the New Israeli Cinema series.
