The 2013 grant season is upon us and there are only two Tier III grant application workshops left. Grant workshops will cover how to use the new online grant application on GO™ and show how the Tier III grant has been streamlined. Council members will be present to discuss county guidelines and are available for questions. Grant workshops are also a great place network and start those collaborations!

SCFD Is Seeking Spring Semester Interns

The SCFD offers the opportunity for unpaid academic internships to students completing graduation or practicum requirements in the arts, nonprofit management or public administration, and who have an interest in the nonprofit arts community.

Position Title: Academic Intern
Time Requirement: This position requires working in the SCFD office a minimum of 6 hours each week of the semester, and may be extended by student or SCFD staff depending on interest.

Purpose:
To understand and carry out the mission of SCFD and statutory requirements, to support SCFD staff in the grant making and communications efforts of the district, to attend and observe public meetings in order to learn job functions and the overall work of the district. Occasional opportunities to attend cultural events and related activities may be available.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide administrative support as needed to Program staff and the Office Administrator in managing SCFD’s database and recipient organizations’ records
Assist staff with reviewing new applicant organization’s eligibility files, including analyzing financial documents and conducting research on the organization’s programming
Assist staff with social media marketing including: Facebook, Twitter, and blogging

Possibly assist staff with gathering data and/or design layout for SCFD annual report
Read and understand materials such as SCFD statute; Tier I, II, and III funding requirements and applications; County Cultural Council and District Board notebooks, and audited financial statements in order to understand the purpose and operations of SCFD
Create and maintain electronic files of grant documents
Assist staff with proofreading documents to insure accurate distributions
Accompany SCFD staff members as requested to county cultural council meetings, district board meetings, and community meetings

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Superior attention to detail
Ability to interpret and analyze financial nonprofit financial documents (Profit and Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, and IRS Forms)
Excellent writing and communication skills
Basic knowledge of nonprofit and/or government management and operations
PC savvy and the ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google programs.

Education or Formal Training

Preferred upper division undergraduate or masters degree level student or graduate
Training in grant making, communications or nonprofit administration is a plus

Vicki Sterling’s name has officially been in engraved on the Rex Morgan Tribute sculpture. She has joined a growing list of amazing individuals who have served our cultural community. Last week artist, Patrick Marold, engraved the name of the latest recipient of the Rex Morgan Award. Be sure to visit the sculpture on the Galleria Terrace at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

A ceremony was held earlier this month at the Studio Loft at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. It was an exciting evening of cultural happenings to honor all of this year’s Rex Morgan nominees: Patricia Braden, Jeremy Shamos, Greg Stokes, and P.K. Worley, and of course, the recipient, Vicki Sterling. The Rex Morgan Award recognizes individuals who have contributed time, talent and spirit to positively impact the cultural community through volunteer leadership. Since 1998 the Rex Morgan Award has highlighted the extraordinary contributions of District residents.

Those who attended the ceremony enjoyed entertainment by the Colorado Symphony, the Denver Zoo, and Frequent Flyers^® Productions. The 2012 CBCA Economic Activity Study of Metro Denver Culture has been released and has been a big hit! Biannually CBCA collects data from SCFD organizations to produce the Economic Activity Study to show the impacts arts, culture, and science have on our community. Total economic activity for 2012 is $1.76 billion, up 18.4% since the 2010 study. Take that recession!

CBCA hosted a breakfast on Halloween to announce the new study. It was great to see so many community members in attendance including Mayor Hancock, Senator Pat Steadman, and many SCFD board members. Rex Morgan Tribute, giving back to the community.

In 2009, a committee was formed to commission a public art sculpture to highlight the contributions of the recipients of the Rex Morgan Award, to elevate awareness of SCFD and Mr. Morgan’s contributions and to thank the public for over 20 years of support. The Rex Morgan Tribute Committee, comprised of members of the SCFD Board of Directors and cultural community stakeholders, implemented a selection process, fundraising and oversight of the Tribute project.

On Wednesday October 19, 2011, the Rex Morgan Tribute sculpture, created by Colorado artist Patrick Marold, was installed on the Galleria Terrace at the Denver Arts Complex. The 8ft tall work incorporates art and science with text elements to honor threefold: the citizens who comprise SCFD, the recipients of the Rex Morgan Award and the legacy of Rex Morgan. Its limestone blocks represent the layered relationships of the SCFD with shadows carved into the layers of stone to reveal the shape of these relationships, merging into each other, and anchored between the solidarity of each stratum.

In May the five Tier I institutions gave their annual presentations to the SCFD Board of Directors at their monthly meeting. To tell the truth this is one of my favorite board meeting. It is a great time to learn about upcoming things happening at the Tier I’s, and it is always inspiring to hear CEO’s so passionate about arts, culture, and science. Below are some awe inspiring facts about our great institutions.

The Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) was one of 6 institutions in the nation to plan the development of a National Botanic Gardens in Haiti. DBG is the 5^th highest attended botanic gardens in the US.
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS) advanced knowledge of prehistory with the Snowmastodon™ excavation and attracted more than 45 international scientists to this geological discovery. The science education collaboration, Urban Advantage, included DMNS, DBG, the Denver Zoo and 3 school districts and is among the first to be developed outside its NYC origination.
Denver Zoo, the 4^th most popular zoo in the country, was named the greenest zoo in the United States for its sustainability commitment and is working in 17 countries on more than 84 conservation projects. The opening of Toyota Elephant Passage on June 1 will give guests the opportunity to explore and discover the rich history of animals in Asian culture, their complicated relationship with humans and the efforts of Denver Zoo and its colleagues to protect their future. It is like no other animal care facility in the world.
The Denver Art Museum currently hosts the only 2012 US showing of the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective and shortly will debut the only US showing of On Becoming Van Gogh, a massive exhibition of over 80 paintings, the first for the Rocky Mountain region. Ten years in the making, the Van Gogh exhibition, organized by the Denver Art Museum, is testimony to the value of SCFD consistent funding.
The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, one of the largest theatrical organizations in the Country, continues to make important contributions to the American Theatre. The New Play Summit has become a top new works event, drawing theatre professionals from around the country. Each season, the DCPA produces and presents a varied range of classic, contemporary and new work in addition to debuting National tours, such as THE BOOK OF MORMON.

Tier 1 institutions continue to successfully engage visitors from throughout the 7-county district.

Our attendance is an extraordinary 5 million visitors, countering national downward trends in much larger metropolitan areas
Through SCFD Free Days, more than 1.3 million visits were free to area residents—a value of nearly $16 million
One half million students participated in our education programs
We served 5,150 schools, an increase of 20%
Membership holds strong at 200,000 households
Tier 1 employment reached 2,200 people in a variety of positions with all levels of education.
Our 5,300 person volunteer corps contributed 452,000 hours of service valued at $10 million

Program Manager Nancy McCamey and I went to the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent Retrospective exhibit at the Denver Art Museum last night. What a delightful show, we had a blast picking out our favorite designs. The exhibit captures the many distinctive styles of Yves Saint Laurent’s and his inspirations.

Yves Saint Laurent will be at DAM from March 25- July 8, 2012 so make sure to stop by and take in all the luxury.
